Time to celebrate the Dog Days of Summer

Written by Christina Tota | Aug 26, 2023 2:00:00 PM

The Dog Days of Summer is a time when we bond with our dogs through simpler, quiet moments, sharing some water or taking leisurely strolls in the cooler parts of the day. These days bring us closer to our four-legged friends reminding us to show them extra care and appreciation as we navigate the hottest days of the year together.

Keeping your faithful fido cool during this last blast of summer heat is essential to ensure their comfort and safety. Here are some ways to help your fluffy friend beat the heat:

  1. Always keep a fresh and easily accessible water source for your dog. Dogs drink lots when it heats up outside, so you’ll want to keep a keen eye out and ensure they have a water bowl always filled with cool water. When out on walks, make sure to bring a portable water bottle or collapsible bowl to ensure they can stay hydrated.
  2. Create shaded areas in your yard or on your patio where your dog can retreat from the sun. Trees, umbrellas, or portable shade structures work well and can ensure your dog has somewhere to get out of the direct sun.
  3. Avoid intense exercise during the hottest parts of the day. Walking your dog on hot pavement can burn their paw pads. Stick to grassy areas or walk your dog in the early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler.
  4. Make frozen dog treats using dog-safe ingredients, like peanut butter or yogurt. Not only will your pup think they are delicious, but it will cool them off as well. Looking for natural peanut butter packed with nutrients but none of the additives? Check out one of our Rewards partners, Endless Pawzabilities Pet Boutique and Barkery. CAA Members get 15% off every Friday!
  5. Bring out a wading pool or sprinkler if your dog enjoys the water. Not only does it help cool them down but it’s a fun and safe way to burn off some energy during those hot summer days.
  6. If you're taking your dog on a road trip, ensure the car is well-ventilated and that you have plenty of water. Never leave your dog in a parked car, even for a few minutes.
  7. Pack your pet insurance. Knowing that you have pet insurance can give you peace of mind as you let your dog enjoy summer activities. You can worry less about the financial aspect of providing the best care, allowing you to focus on keeping your dog cool and comfortable. CAA Members receive a preferred 12% discounted rate on Pets Plus Us Insurance.

By following these tips, you can help your dog stay cool, comfortable, and safe during the hottest months of the year.
