Potholes: An Unexpected Villain

April 4, 2018 | Lauren Arva

When most people contemplate what it is that gives them the heebie jeebies, common things that come to mind include ghosts and goblins, vampires and monsters, werewolves and things that go bump in the night. Perhaps even the odd creepy-crawly.

Pothole

What most people fail to consider when thinking about things that give them the creeps, are potholes (yes really, potholes!). There is nothing scarier than pothole season and this year, it’s particularly frightening in Niagara.

To mark the 15th Worst Roads campaign, we’re asking you to think of what makes a situation truly scary. What does any good scary story need? A truly chilling, spooky story requires a villain, a hero, and of course, sweat-inducing, hand-clenching, heart-pounding suspense.

What makes a sinister villain, you ask? Someone or something who is truly malicious, powerful, cunning, and ultimately has a fatal flaw. So how do potholes fit into this category? Between their ability to make you and your car fill with a sense of dread upon seeing them, the destructive path they leave to our roads in their wake, their ability to generate traffic and congestion and poor signage, it’s easy to understand why potholes are far more evil than you may think. Not to fear, however; like any villain, potholes must have a fatal flaw, a weakness, and CAA’s Worst Roads Campaign is willing and ready to challenge these monsters once and for all.

As you know, every villain needs a hero to challenge them in their attempted destruction. So, what makes a good hero? A good hero is brave, strong, passionate, and prepared to make a difference for the good of their community. That’s where you come in! Whether you’re a pedestrian, motorist, cyclist or motorcyclist we want to hear from you. It’s your voice that makes a difference. Tell us which road in Niagara is the worst, and once votes are collected, we share the results with local politicians and other decision makers to improve the roads in our local community.

Finally, suspense. An absolute necessity in any scary situation, prompting nail biting, jitters, and that killer anticipation. With CAA’s Worst Roads Campaign running until Friday, April 13th (a very spooky day indeed), you have plenty of time to anticipate the final Top 10 Worst Roads results. Will it be Drummond Road in Niagara Falls? How terrifying! Or what about Dominion Road in Fort Erie? Oh no, not that road! The suspense is killing us …

So, go ahead, you can open your eyes now, there’s really no reason to be scared. Those potholes won’t stand a chance. Vote today
