Butchart Gardens
A former quarry haven, this group of lush and colourful floral displays is located just outside of Victoria in Brentford Bay. Overflowing with colourful blooms it draws over one million visitors each year and is has the prestigious designation of being a National Historic Site of Canada. In total, there are five main gardens to explore – the Sunken Garden, Rose Garden, Japanese Garden, Italian Garden and Mediterranean Garden – all of which are unique in their own way.
Whale watching tours
Perhaps one of the more exhilarating adventures one can take out west is by heading out on the water for some whale watching. Seeing these massive marine mammals in their natural habitat is something anyone visiting the island should consider. The most common types you can see include Orcas, humpback whales and Pacific gray whales. Spring and summer are the best time of year to see these creatures and various species of wildlife.
Cathedral Grove in MacMillan Provincial Park
Home to some of the oldest and tallest trees in Canada, Cathedral Grove draws people in from all over the world – and for good reason. Some of its trees are over 800 years old and 80 metres tall. Known for its extensive collection of Douglas fir trees, the landscape provided the perfect location to film scenes for Star Wars: Return of the Jedi – yet another cool fact about this part of the island.
