Summer Barbeque Safety Tips for Dog Owners

With peak barbeque season upon us, it’s the perfect time to break out the grill and enjoy some good food and drinks with friends. Outdoor gatherings seem like a great opportunity to bring along our pets to enjoy the fun, but it’s important to be cautious of the dangers a cookout could pose to our furry friends.

If you’re planning on hosting or attending a barbeque this summer, here are a few things to keep in mind so your four-legged companion can have a great time too!

Bad to the Bone

Everyone loves a good rack of ribs grilled on the barbeque. However, they might serve as a potential choking hazard to your animals. Bones that have been cooked will fragment when bitten by a strong enough bite. This creates a choking hazard for your dog, or in particularly bad cases, the shards of bone could cause some major health complications. Be sure to place your bones in an out of reach container to keep your pup safe!

Too Hot to Handle

When you leave your grill unattended, make sure to close the lid so a curious furry family member doesn’t end up burning a paw. If you plan on using a charcoal grill, be attentive that the salt and oil dripping onto the coal may attract your pet. Coal is not something a dog should ingest as it can cause serious health complications. To prevent any accidents, dispose of your coal in a secure location once they have cooled down.

Cool as a Cucumber

To include your pets in the action, try out a frozen fruit treat! Simply fill up a bowl with dog-safe fruit, then fill the remaining space in the bowl with water. Be sure to avoid grapes, grape juice, raisins and citrus peels. Place the bowl in a freezer overnight and voila, your pet will have a tasty treat that also cools them down on a hot day. If you want to go the extra mile and provide some entertainment for your pets, try an inflatable pool. It is a simple setup and provides endless fun for your pups!

Preparation is key when it comes to keeping your furry friends safe during a summer barbeque. However, if something unexpected happens to your pet, have peace of mind knowing that your pet has pet insurance from Pets Plus Us.
