With the sun shining and warm weather here to stay, we're highlighting some of the top patios across the Niagara region. In the second installment of the CAA Niagara Top Patio series, we're visiting Taris on the Water. Located in Welland, the restaurant is beautifully situated next to Bridge 13 and provides an idyllic view of the Welland Canal.

Before opening in 2015, owners Tom and Leda Laborie visited the area often to stay at their friend’s nearby B&B. When they first visited, they were in awe of the canal’s beauty and were surprised to find a lack of restaurants on the water. The opportunity to open Taris occured when their friend  suggested that they purchase a space that had recently been listed for sale. Having no prior restaurant experience beyond a love for food and the Welland community, this opportunity represented a big leap in a new direction.

Uncertainty quickly dissolved following a European getaway filled with amazing dining experiences. Once they returned home, they took one last look at the location, had a 20-minute discussion and decided that this would be their new adventure. Both left their jobs in the marketing world, moved to Welland, and 5 strong years later, they have become a staple of celebration in the city.

Taris serves the best classic favourites, like Tom’s Burger – which has been on the menu since opening day – and fish tacos. Both are a hit. The regulars even plead with Leda and Tom to serve both items on the dinner and lunch menu. The menu has something for everyone, ranging from celebration-worthy Filet Mignon to homestyle Fried Chicken that hits the spot.

The Fish & Frites haddock was light battered in tempura and fried to perfection. The fish was flakey and lightly battered. A great surprise was that the Fish & Frites are gluten free, which is hard to find. BBQ lovers will enjoy the Creole Shrimp with Mac ‘N’ Cheese, a southern combo that will not disappoint. The shrimp is smoked on their patio in a healthy coating of creole southern spices, giving each bite a firery kick with a touch of sweetness.

Leda and Tom have always made guest experience a priority at Taris on the Water, which is evident in the patio's wide layout. Guests can still have fun and celebrate those special life moments, while socially distancing. Be sure to check out their online menu more for information.
