Making the choice to get a pet is something many households consider from time to time. Whether you're surprising your kids with a furry friend or live solo and are looking for a new companion, adding an animal to your family is an exciting moment many look forward to. No matter your situation, there are a few ways you can prep to make sure your pet transitions to its new environment effectively. Keep reading to learn more.

Purchase a pet carrier

Ensuring you have this ahead of time will make travelling with your furry friend much easier. If you're bringing home a puppy or a kitten, getting them used to sitting in their carrier while in the car will be a good habit for future travels. If you're adopting a pet who's a little older, you'll want to make sure there is plenty of room for them to sit so they don't feel trapped. Try placing cozy blankets inside as an added level of comfort.

Adjustment Time is Crucial

This tip is highly recommended if you already have another animal living at home. While you want your new pet to like they belong, you don't want the others to feel like their territory is being taken over. Introducing them through a cracked door will allow them to recognize one another's scent moving forward and will help you gauge how they will interact with each other. Pick a room that provides your new pet enough space to roam, play and sleep in. This will help you get a better feel for their personality before they explore the rest of your home.

Food, Treats, and Toys

Aside from their humans, of course, these might be your pets' favourite things in the world. Make sure the food you give them is appropriate for their age as there are various nutrients they need at the different stages in their life. Consulting your vet on this is always a smart option. Toys are also an effective way of making sure your pet gets enough exercise and maintains a healthy and active lifestyle. Finally, treats are a great way to reward good behaviour or show some added love to your pet.

Cleaning Supplies

While your pets will likely be trained to either go outside or use a designated spot indoors to relieve themselves, every now and then they might have a little mishap. Investing in a pet-specific carpet cleaner will help remove stains and spots that are left behind by your cat or dog. You will also want to look into lint rollers as these will catch any stray hairs that they shed.
