Travel Insurance Documents

Many people believe that travel insurance is only there to cover you if you or your family member needs medical attention while you’re travelling. While emergency medical insurance may be the most common type of travel insurance, there are actually different kinds of travel insurance that protect particular aspects of your trip.

Read below for a quick guide on the different types of travel insurance offered by CAA Insurance.

Emergency Medical Coverage

Did you know that if you’re an Ontario resident travelling outside Canada, Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) does not cover your medical expenses? In fact, even if you’re travelling within Canada, not all medical expenses are covered by OHIP. CAA Travel Medical Insurance will protect you and your family against unforeseen medical expenses to a maximum of $5 million1 when you travel where your provincial coverage does not follow. Coverage includes:

  • COVID-19 protection2
  • Hospital accommodations, lab tests, x-rays, nursing and ground ambulance
  • Emergency dental expenses
  • Transportation back to Canada if you were abroad
  • Medical follow-up in Canada if you were abroad
  • Reimbursements and assistance for vision care, hearing aids, pet care and kennel stays

CAA Niagara also offers different emergency medical plans, including single-trip, multi-trip and visitors to Canada coverage.

What is Single-Trip Travel Medical Insurance?

Single-trip travel Insurance plans are ideal for those who typically take one trip per year. This coverage protects you for the specific number of days of your trip, with the policy covering you from the day of departure until you return to Canada.

What is Multi-Trip Travel Medical Insurance?

If you’re a frequent traveller, you can benefit from the flexibility of a multi-trip plan. This plan provides coverage for up to four, eight, 15 or 30 day trips outside of your province of residence – for a full year. The plan starts each time you leave Canada, but if you stay longer than the days purchased, a top-up will be required.

What is Visitors to Canada Insurance?

Visitors to Canada Insurance provides protection for emergency medical treatment while in Canada. This coverage is perfect if you have family members or friends who may be visiting Canada from another country.

Trip Cancellation Insurance

This type of insurance protects you against unexpected events that could delay or cancel your trip. For instance, suppose you’re set to leave on your vacation in a few days, and your travel companion gets sick. If you had to cancel your trip, your non-refundable prepaid travel expenses and reorganizing travel plans would be covered. Trip cancellation coverage includes:

  • Unexpected illness for you, travel companion or immediate family member
  • Stolen or lost travel documents while on the way to the airport
  • An adverse reaction to a travel vaccine
  • A school exam suddenly being rescheduled
  • Finding out that the business meeting you’re travelling to has been cancelled

Trip Interruption Insurance

Trip Interruption Insurance covers any unexpected interruption while on your trip. Suppose you have to come back home earlier than planned, because you or your travel companion is sick. Or a family member back home becomes very ill and you want to get home to them. No one plans for their travel to be interrupted but we know it happens. Interruption coverage provides you with benefits to ensure your travel investment is protected. It may pay for your early return and could even help you recover some of what you’ve paid for.

Coverage includes:

  • A missed departure or connection due to weather or an airport strike
  • Accommodations and meals due to a schedule change or a missed connection
  • Coverage to get you home due to an unforeseen emergency
  • Denied boarding/entry at customs or security checkpoints due to health regulations set by the government authorities or mistaken identity
