It’s that time of year again—school buses are back, crosswalks are busy, and the streets are full of eager students. As drivers, we play a critical role in making sure kids get to school safely. Whether you're commuting, running errands, or dropping off your own kids, here are some important reminders to help everyone stay safe.
School Zones: Slow Down and Stay Alert
- In many parts of Niagara, school zones are 40 km/h. Obey posted signs—even if you're in a hurry.
- Watch for crossing guards and be prepared to stop.
- Never pass a vehicle stopped for pedestrians—especially near schools.
School Buses: Stop Means Stop
- When a school bus has flashing red lights and an extended stop arm, you must stop—regardless of which direction you're driving, unless there’s a median.
- Stay alert even after the lights stop flashing—kids may still be crossing.
- Did you know? All school buses must stop at all railway crossings; however, the upper alternating red lights are not used for these stops.
Watch for Kids—Everywhere
- Kids are unpredictable. Be extra cautious near parks, schools, and neighbourhoods.
- Check blind spots for small pedestrians and cyclists before turning or backing up.
- Avoid distractions. Put down your phone and give the road your full attention.
Peak Traffic Times = Extra Patience
- Expect delays around school start and dismissal times.
- Plan your route to avoid school zones if possible during those hours.
- Stay calm—even when other drivers aren’t.
Let’s all do our part to make the roads safer for students, families, and school staff. A little extra caution goes a long way.
